Ron Alting is a true “hometown guy” who has never forgotten his Hoosier roots. First elected to the Indiana Senate in 1998, he represents Senate District 22 in Tippecanoe County, which includes Purdue University and the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette.
Alting is committed to ensuring all Hoosier students have the educational opportunities they need to succeed. He was recognized for his efforts with the 2003 Welsh-Bowen Distinguished Public Service Award from Hoosiers for Higher Education. In addition, he is a member of the National Conference of State Legislature’s education committee.
A strong advocate for Veterans, Alting is a Major in the Indiana Guard Reserve and a member of the Sons of the American Legion – Post 11. He is also the recipient of the 2002 and 2005 American Legion Distinguished Public Service Award.
In the Senate, Alting chairs the Senate Commerce, Public Policy & Interstate Cooperation Committee and is a member of the Agriculture & Small Business, Judiciary and Elections committees.
A former small business owner, Alting received the 2005 Small Business Champion Award from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves on the Community Advisory Board of Indiana University School of Medicine – Lafayette. Alting has also served on the boards of Meals on Wheels, Bright National Bank, Tippecanoe Arts Federation, the Purdue University Liberal Arts Alumni Association, and the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra.
He was a member of the Lafayette Jefferson High School basketball team that reached the state finals in 1974. A graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and Purdue University, Alting currently works as a key account specialist for Tipmont REMC.
A widower, he resides in Lafayette with his two children, Ronnie Jr., 17 and Ashley, 15.
